To learn German for GCSE, you will need to work with a reliable and experienced tutor. We can help with this by offering tuition for school German and improving your speaking, reading, listening and writing skills. Additionally, our tutor will teach you the grammar and vocabulary in areas where you show gaps or lack of confidence. 

Exam revision in German can be booked at short notice or taken regularly over a longer period of time, depending on your needs.

German tuition for Year 11 exams

In the English system, year 11 exams, i.e. GCSE, require a good knowledge at levels A1 and A2 in German (based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). We can give your child the support they need.

In an average 1-hour lesson at this level, you can expect to:

  • Focus on speaking German during the lesson
  • Go over one of the required topic areas or consolidate the topic if already learned
  • Learn new vocabulary or consolidate vocabulary, e.g. in form of a quiz, table or similar
  • Discuss the grammar focusing on e.g. irregular verbs, past tenses, word order in German sentences
  • Practice comprehension: listening and reading

Typical GCSE Reading exam: 

(Higher German – 1 hour, no dictionaries)

Section A: Questions & Answers in English

You read three short texts on different topics in German and complete tasks based on the texts, for instance: true or false statements, completing sentences.

You then read four texts around 150 words each, on different topics in German and answer questions in English.

Section B: Questions & Answers in German

You read four texts in German, around 100 words each, on different topics and answer the questions in German or complete tasks in German.

Finally, you translate approx. 5 longer sentences from German into English.

(Foundation German – 45 minutes, no dictionaries)

Section A: Questions & Answers in English

You read three very short texts on different topics in German and complete tasks based on the texts, for instance: true or false statements, completing a table.

You then read five texts on different topics in German and answer questions in English.

Section B: Questions & Answers in German

You read five very short texts in German, under 100 words each, on different topics and answer the questions in German or complete tasks in German.

Finally, you translate approx. 5 simple and short sentences from German into English.
