Higher Physics and Advanced Higher Physics

Physics tuition for Years 5 and 6

Private tutors for Physics revision.

Higher and Advanced Higher Physics in the Scottish Education system expands the knowledge acquired on National 5 or equivalent level (e.g. GCSE).

Our tutors follow the SQA course and exam criteria and help students develop confidence and understanding of complex tasks and concepts.

We recommend:

  • regular tuition over a longer period of time – ideal for students who want to gradually improve their Physics knowledge and those who look for additional practice outside of the classroom
  • pre-exam booster sessions – great for more confident students who need that little bit extra challenge and want to test their skills and aim for top marks.

Higher Physics covers three main areas:
  • Kinematic & Linear Dynamics: scalar and vectorial physical quantities, velocities, acceleration, projectile motion, forces, energy and power / motion – equations and graphs / collisions, explosions and impulse / gravitation / special relativity, harmonic motion
  • Particles and Waves: dynamics of charged particles, nuclear reactions, radioactive sources, interference and refraction, spectra, matter interactions
  • Electronic: Currents, monitoring and measuring AC, current, potential difference, power and resistance, electrical sources, capacitators.

Advanced Higher Physics covers:
  • Rotational motion and dynamics, angular momentum and conservation laws
  • Gravitational physics: orbits and trajectories, 2 body problem, gravity fields and gravity potential (some additional notion about Astrophysics, galaxies, cosmology, stellar physics)
  • Quanta and waves (introduction to quantum theory / waves / astroparticle physics, polarisation
  • Electromagnetism: electric and magnetic fields, electric potential, Coulomb force and Lorentz force, charges and currents, Maxwell laws, circuits and electronic elements (capacitors, resistances, inductance).
  • Experimental physics (Units, prefixes and uncertainties, data analysis / evaluation as well as significance of experimental uncertainties)
A Level Physics

You can book online Higher & Advanced Higher Physics lessons with Francesco via the booking form below:

Typical Higher Physics exam duration: 3 hours (two papers for Higher, paper 1 – 45 minutes, paper 2 – 2h15m)

Materials needed:

  •  scientific calculator that meets the requirements of the specification
  •  black/blue ink or black/blue ball point pen (pencil for drawings only)

Typical questions:

  • Higher Physics – multiple choice + argumentative questions (it is very important to show your method, as it is evaluated along with the final result).
  • Advanced Higher – argumentative questions (it is very important to show your method, as it is evaluated along with the final result).

Additional Information:

  • show all necessary working; otherwise marks for method may be lost.
  • cross through any work that you do not want to be marked.
  • the maximum mark for this paper is 155.

General advice:

  • unless otherwise stated, you may quote formulae, without proof form the provided formulae booklet (you must return the booklet before leaving the room, otherwise penalty will apply and could mean losing all marks).
