Higher and Advanced Higher Physics in the Scottish Education system expands the knowledge acquired on National 5 or equivalent level (e.g. GCSE).

Kinematic & Linear Dynamics: scalar and vectorial physical quantities, velocities, acceleration, projectile motion, forces, energy and power / motion – equations and graphs / collisions, explosions and impulse / gravitation / special relativity, harmonic motion
Particles and Waves: dynamics of charged particles, nuclear reactions, radioactive sources, interference and refraction, spectra, matter interactions
Electronic: Currents, monitoring and measuring AC, current, potential difference, power and resistance, electrical sources, capacitators.

Rotational motion and dynamics, angular momentum and conservation laws
Gravitational physics: orbits and trajectories, 2 body problem, gravity fields and gravity potential (some additional notion about Astrophysics, galaxies, cosmology, stellar physics)
Quanta and waves (introduction to quantum theory / waves / astroparticle physics, polarisation
Electromagnetism: electric and magnetic fields, electric potential, Coulomb force and Lorentz force, charges and currents, Maxwell laws, circuits and electronic elements (capacitors, resistances, inductance).
Experimental physics (Units, prefixes and uncertainties, data analysis / evaluation as well as significance of experimental uncertainties)

Typical Higher Physics exam duration: 3 hours (two papers for Higher, paper 1 – 45 minutes, paper 2 – 2h15m)
